Description:

At a cool 52 degrees year round and 100 feet below the surface of the earth, explore an underground river. Guides pilot custom-made boats along the subterranean river for over a mile, pointing out native rare Northern blind cave fish and blind crawfish and explain the natural forces that are yet at work creating great chambers below the rolling hills of southern Indiana. Above ground, you can prospect for gemstone, fossils, and arrowheads at the Mystery River Sluice, hike to Indiana's largest sinkhole in the Emery and Ruth Bolton Natural Area, visit picnic areas and browse the gift/souvenir shop. Description:

Located within Spring Mill State Park, the Grissom Memorial pays tribute to Mitchell's native son, Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom. The memorial is a tribute to the Mitchell-born astronaut who was a pioneer in America's exploration of outer space. The interactive museum features exhibits and actual mementoes from Grissom's space travels, including a space suit and an actual capsule he piloted. Open daily year round, 8:30am-4pm. Closed New Year's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Indiana Cave Trail

Description:

The exhibit is housed in the StoneGate Arts & Education Center, built in 1926 & listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  It was once the headquarters of the Indiana Limestone Company. This self-guided tour will take visitors to see tools, murals, maps, historic news accounts and archival photographs of the world famous industry. Open Mon-Fri 8 am - 12 Noon, 1pm - 4pm, free admission.

Description:

The museum holds limestone exhibits and artifacts, local carvings from Lawrence County artisans, as well as a host of other memorabilia and historical lore from the region. The Lawrence County Museum of History and its gift shop is open five day a week: Tuesday through Friday, 9 am-4 pm and Saturday 9 am-3 pm. Admission is free but donations or memberships are always welcomed.

Midwest Trail Ride is a privately owned Horseman's Campground bordering the Hoosier National Forest. Enjoy access to nearly 100 miles of well-marked trails in the timeless beauty of the Deam National Wilderness with lakes, streams, diverse stands of hardwoods, evergreens, wildflowers, all to make your ride unforgettable. Description:

Visitors to the park enjoy its unique facilities, including a memorial to Hoosier astronaut Virgil I. 'Gus' Grissom and the Pioneer Village with its working Grist Mill. But many of the other showcase activities center on the region's natural wonders, including Twin Caves and the old-growth Donaldson Woods. Staff conducts underground boat tours at Twin Caves from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Participants on these tours have an excellent chance of seeing bats, blind crayfish, and the endangered Northern blind cavefish. There are numerous hiking trails that outdoor enthusiasts can explore, ranging in difficulty from easy to rugged and from one-quarter mile to 2.5 miles in length. Other recreational activities include an outdoor Olympic-size swimming pool near the campground, sports courts, a nature center, picnic areas, shelter houses, and a large playground.

Description:

The 200,000-acre Hoosier National Forest spans nine counties in the rolling hills of south central Indiana. The Charles C. Deam Wilderness Area provides trails for hiking and equestrian use, hunting and fishing. Lawrence County portion of the forest includes streams, lakes, hardwood forest stands, natural ridges, hollows and trails for hiking, biking and horses.

Virgil I. Grissom Monument

Description:

A 44-foot, 28-ton limestone statue of Virgil I. Grissom's Atlas Rocket with the Gemini 3 capsule stands on the park lawn of Mitchell's City Hall. The base of the monument consists of four 10 ton limestone tablets hand-carved with the history of Grissom's military and space flights. The monument took 15 years to complete and was funded entirely of donations from the Mitchell community and others from Indiana. It is on the site once occupied by the South Side Riley School, Grissom's elementary school. Bricks from the school were used for the wall surrounding the monument.

Description:

Visit the boyhood home of Bedford native & artist William T. Wiley.  The Wiley House features regular artists showings & exhibitions as well as prints of Mr. Wiley's work.  Hrs. are Thur. & Fri. 1pm-6pm, Sat. 9am-1pm, or by appointment. 


Williams Covered Bridge

Description:

Indiana's longest double span covered bridge, open to foot traffic only, spans the East Fork of White River. Built by Joseph J. Daniels in 1884 and named for the nearby town of Williams. It is a Howe Truss Design, a length of 402' including 13' overhangs and it is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Take a tour through Southern Indiana on the Indiana Covered Bridge Loop. Start with Williams Covered Bridge, one of Indiana's longest covered bridges. Eight other covered bridges await you during you journey through the rolling hills of the region.
